Smart Automation for Passage Lighting with Sonoff Motion Sensor and Zigbee Module

This type of automation is primarily recommended for passage areas, such as hallways or spaces where people spend limited time.
A common use case is in a hallway with two switches, one at each end.
The idea is to activate the light only for the necessary time to pass through. When motion is detected, the light turns on, and after a set period (e.g., one or two minutes), if no further motion is detected, it turns off automatically.
It’s a practical and efficient automation that can contribute to energy savings.
Required Materials
To build this automation, the following materials are required:
Sonoff SNZB-03P Motion Sensor: A Zigbee sensor that detects motion, ideal for hallways or rooms where lighting is only needed briefly.
Sonoff ZBMINIR2 Module: This compact module converts any traditional switch into a smart switch, maintaining the home’s original aesthetics.
Sonoff Zigbee Hub: This automation requires a Zigbee hub to integrate both the motion sensor and module. The Bridge Pro can be used here.
This is just one example; similar products can also be used.
Steps to Set Up the Automation
Step 1: Pair the SNZB-03P Door Sensor
Make sure the Zigbee Hub is set up and connected to your Wi-Fi network through the eWeLink app.
Put the SNZB-03P sensor in pairing mode by pressing the side button until the LED light starts blinking.
In the eWeLink app, select the Zigbee Hub and add a new device. Wait a few seconds for the sensor to be identified and paired.
Once paired, place the sensor in the desired location, ensuring it faces the area where you want motion to be detected.
Step 2: Pair the Smart Module
Connect the module’s wiring according to the setup instructions. For detailed guidance, see the full review here.
Open the eWeLink app and choose the option to add a new device.
Put the module into pairing mode by pressing the small button.
Follow the app’s instructions to complete the installation.
Step 3: Create the Automation in the eWeLink App
With both devices paired, access the automation menu in the eWeLink app.
Select the option to create a new automation and choose the SNZB-03P Motion Sensor as the trigger device.
Configure the motion sensor to only detect movement when the light is dim. This ensures the action is triggered only when the hallway or room is dark.
Set the condition so that when motion is detected, the module/switch is activated.
You can create another automation to perform the opposite action. When motion is no longer detected for a specified period, such as 2 minutes, the light will turn off.
To do this, access the automation menu in the eWeLink app again. Select the option to create a new automation, and choose the SNZB-03P Motion Sensor as the trigger device. Set the condition so that if no motion is detected for 2 minutes, the module/switch will deactivate the light.
Testing and Adjustments
Once the automations are set up, test the system to ensure everything functions as expected. Walk through the area to trigger the motion sensor and verify that the light turns on appropriately.
Observe the time it takes for the light to turn off after motion ceases. If necessary, adjust the time settings in the automations to better suit your needs. Make sure the sensor is positioned correctly for optimal detection and adjust as needed for any blind spots.
