I had the honor of conducting an exclusive interview with Alex Xie, CEO of SONOFF, one of the leading brands in the smart home market. From your perspective, what are the main factors or turning points that have propelled SONOFF to the top of the market?


Alex Xie: SONOFF’s success lies in our unwavering focus on user needs and attentiveness to community feedback (Voice of Customer, VOC). By keeping user experience at the core of our operations, we have been able to adapt our market strategies and optimize products to meet evolving demands. Initially, SONOFF specialized in smart switch products, with the brand name deriving from “Smart ON&OFF.” As user demands diversified, we expanded into other product categories such as sensors and cameras. In recent years, we have concentrated more on energy-saving, temperature control, and energy management products, which have received excellent feedback in the market


What role does the “community” play in SONOFF’s innovation process?


Alex Xie: The community plays a pivotal role in SONOFF’s innovation. By listening to users’ voices (VOC), we identify real needs and develop products tailored to market demands. For example, the Matter protocol—a crucial standard for interoperability among smart home devices—has been a significant area of focus for us. We are proud to be among the first companies to develop Matter-enabled products, a milestone made possible through the support and feedback from our community. Community members also act as product testers, helping us identify and resolve early-stage issues to deliver more polished products to the market.

What is the process for taking a new product from concept to the hands of the consumer?


Alex Xie: Our process begins with gathering and categorizing information through multiple channels, using user needs as the foundation for product design. After conducting market research, we determine the core functions of the product. Through prototyping and user feedback, we continuously refine the product. What are the development trends in the smart home market over the next five years?


Alex Xie: The smart home market is expected to experience sustained growth over the next five years, driven by emerging technologies. The widespread adoption of the Matter protocol will lower the entry barriers for smart home use, enabling more consumers to enjoy the convenience of smart living. The user base will expand from tech enthusiasts to mainstream consumers, creating a broader and more diverse audience. SONOFF will continue to focus on enhancing product usability and compatibility to meet the needs of users at all levels

How does SONOFF achieve differentiation in technology and consumer experience?


Alex Xie: Our products remain inherently open, ensuring users are not confined to a single ecosystem. SONOFF integrates with platforms like IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings via cloud-to-cloud technology, and we further advance openness through Matter protocol compatibility. Additionally, we prioritize lowering the barriers to use through innovative solutions—for example, allowing customers to quickly experience our products’ features simply by powering them on after purchase on Amazon. Moving forward, we will maintain our focus on openness and ease of use, which remain our core objectives.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency


How does SONOFF integrate sustainability into product design, production, and distribution?


Alex Xie: At SONOFF, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our products. We minimize the use of plastics and non-recyclable materials, such as reducing unnecessary accessories like charging heads and providing only essential cables. Additionally, we extend product lifespans to help reduce electronic waste. For example, many of our early products remain functional today through software updates, demonstrating our dedication to product quality and sustainability.

Are there plans to introduce more energy-efficient products?


Alex Xie: Yes, we are actively developing a product line focused on energy management, including solutions for energy storage and HVAC systems. By collaborating with partners in solar energy platforms and boiler systems, we aim to deliver integrated, efficient energy-saving solutions to users, helping them reduce both energy consumption and environmental impact.


Future Technological Expansion

Is there a plan to expand into the AI-powered smart home sector?


Alex Xie: Absolutely. SONOFF has already begun laying the groundwork in the AI-powered smart home space. For instance, we have introduced the iHost computing gateway, which enhances reliability through localized control. Looking ahead, we plan to collaborate with AI large-model development teams to further integrate AI capabilities into SONOFF products. This will enable more intelligent, localized management of home scenarios, creating a seamless and smarter experience for our users.

This approach ensures that we deliver high-value, cost-effective products with strong compatibility.
